Sam’s journey in becoming a lawyer and small business owner in British Columbia is a bit different than most. Soon after being born in rural Bangladesh, Sam’s family moved to Oman to pursue new opportunities. Here he attended an Indian English medium school, which sparked some of his earliest interests that continue today, including in language and literature. Sam became fluent in English, Hindi, and Bengali. Memories of breezy Omani desert beaches, his mother’s rasmalai, and endless games of chess fill up this time in Sam’s life.
At 17 years old, Sam arrived in Canada on New Years Eve, 2010. Looking out the window as the plane landed at YVR, he immediately knew that he was home. Sam immersed himself in Canadian culture and student life at the University of the Fraser Valley, enjoying his new experiences and freedoms. Due to circumstances that would make a return to Oman unsafe, Sam applied for asylum in Canada. During this period, he worked odd jobs and experienced homelessness, but never gave up on his Canadian dream.
